What is Adaptive Costing™?

It is an outsourced, product level, patient costing service built from the development of actual hospital costs per hospital product. Adaptive Costing™ takes feeder data from the hospital via the internet, processes the data according to the CCSAA standards and then provides patient episode costs, revenues and profits back to the site.

Information returned to the site is provided within Microsoft Excel and Access, which is intuitive, easy to access and understand. The solution is highly customisable and adaptable and is aimed at the Group B hospital market. It has also been adapted to meet the diverse needs of emergency and outpatient departments, inpatient and outpatient rehab, GEMS, Dental Health Services Victoria and the Melbourne University Faculty of Economics and Commerce.

Client Testimonial:

Kerryn Healy, Director Finance & Information Services, Goulburn Valley Health

Goulburn Valley Health has been using SyRis Consulting for over six years. During this time GVH has contributed to five cost weight studies and has been involved in numerous benchmarking studies co-coordinated by SyRis Consulting.

Adaptive Costing provides a cost effective clinical costing system for GVH, a major regional referral hospital. The level of accuracy and detail of costing information is enhanced as we can now examine our costs in detail, enabling us to refine and develop our feeder systems further.

Simon Rush provides a value added service using his knowledge and experience in health costing systems and his intimate knowledge of each of his clients’ issues.

Benchmarking projects have allowed us to identify areas where we are operating ‘inefficiently’ compared to others and enabled us to identify problem areas in our cost structures.

Compelling reasons to choose Adaptive Costing™

  • Costs are customised for each site. They can vary with: the size of the hospital, the scope of the costing, the frequency of the processing and the complexity of the processing. In other words, you only pay for what you want.
  • We aim to have the lowest total cost of ownership, compared to other patient costing vendors, when all cost elements are considered.
  • There are no additional software or capital costs; you only pay for implementation and processing.
  • Used over a number of years within Group B Hospital sites in Victoria. Most sites have adopted this solution without the threat of fines from DHS. These sites have used the information to continually make recurrent savings in excess of the cost of the solution.
  • No additional training of staff is required to operate the software or to run the hospital’s costing process.
  • SyRis Consulting is committed to improving clinical business management.
  • All staff members at SyRis Consulting have a number of years experience as hospital employees and therefore understand the inner workings of Victorian Hospitals. The business was developed for Victorian hospitals and continues to focus on the Victorian market.
  • Data produced by Adaptive Costing™ has been used since the 2000 cost weight processes. SyRis Consulting also provides assistance in filling out of the survey and forms associated with this requirement.
  • Numerous benchmarking studies have been provided for our clients. These build on the data from clinical costing activities and have added value for our clients by allowing them to benchmark their patient practice at the utilisation level in a comparable, consistent environment.
  • Successful funding submissions have been prepared for our clients to rectify funding model inadequacies and in obtaining specified grants (recent examples include the Mastoidectomy funding and Same Day medical work)

Client Testimonial:

Graeme Barnes, Past Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital Chief Finance Officer

RVEEH selected SyRis Consulting to undertake the 2001, 2002 and 2003 costing studies with significant success.

The main advantages have been:

  • Simon Rush’s experience in understanding hospital cost structures facilitated implementation and interpretation of results. Costing systems produce substantial volumes of data and hence interpretation and data integrity are critical to achieving clinician support, management information and action plans.
  • Reporting is user-friendly, enabling analysis of significant trends and capacity to drill down to individual encounters and products. The principal points for RVEEH were; no capital outlay for software or hardware, easy implementation and interpretation of results.
