When it comes to power generation, the world is beginning to realise that Local is superior to Remote.

The UN has recognised this in a recent IPCC report (page 7 and 8) which indicates that 55% of the power generated is lost in transmission and management.

In the days of cheap abundant energy, things were fine, we could pump brown coal into the grid like there was no tomorrow. Well tomorrow is here my friends, and we need to work in a new paradigm, one where resources are limited and the impacts of our excess are being seen through smog and environmental damage.

To change the world we need to work with new ways, we can no longer just try to adjust the old ways.

There are many activities being undertaken around the world to attempt to reduce power usage and reduce emissions whilst improving efficiency and capacity. My aim is to bring this message to Kyneton and to work towards self sufficient Community Heating and Power by using:

  • Local power generation and management, with grid connected backup.
  • Capture and use of thermal waste from the power generation to heat water for the town.
  • Transmission and management through a system of "Private Wires" through the town.
  • Expertise harnessed and expanded from local resources and universities (Kyneton Hospital and Ballarat University)
  • Oversight by a board of unpaid, non-aligned volunteers drawn from the community
  • Sponsorship by alturistic, community focussed organisations (eg: Bendigo Bank)
  • Victorian State Government Sponsorship through the Sustainability Grants

At the same time, the use of local power reduction schemes would also be integral to this process. By this I am referring to Solar Photo Voltaic, Solar Hot Water and Local Wind Turbine use.

Your assistance would be appreciated!
