When it comes to power generation, the world is beginning to realise that Local is superior to Remote.

The UN has recognised this in a recent IPCC report (page 7 and 8) which indicates that 55% of the cost of power generation is lost in transmission and management.

In the days of cheap abundant energy, things were fine, we could pump brown coal into the grid like there was no tomorrow. We need to work within a new paradigm, one where resources are limited and the impacts of our excess are being seen through smog and environmental damage.

To change the world we need to work with new ways, we can no longer just try to adjust the old ways.

A Community Power Trust, with ownership of the generating assets and profits has the ability to:

  • Reduce the costs of power to the community
  • Secure the power supply for the community
  • Reduce CO2 emissions
  • Fully integrate (locally load balance) intermittent generators so that they are truly effective
  • Invest in further appropriate long term renewable energy generation (Solar PV, wind, biomass)
  • Unite the community
  • Drive employment and build skills
  • Build local knowledge within the schools and local organisations

For the past generations, we have sold off our generating assets into a centralised brown coal generating structure.  This is a concept which is coming to the end of its useful life and we need to find other alternatives.

THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO DO THE WRONG THING!

This has been proven to be a viable alternative in Woking, UK and should be fully tested in a local Victorian context.  I believe Kyneton and Woodend could be a useful pilot project for Victoria and Australia.
